FuturePost vs Secret Letter: Two Different Ways to Send Words Forward
FuturePost and Secret Letter both let a message wait for a future date, and both are free at the time of this review. The important difference is not the price. FuturePost is built around accounts, letter management, and delivery by email. Secret Letter creates a timed link without asking for an account or email address.
The short answer
Choose FuturePost if you want the service to send the letter to an inbox later and you value a dashboard, editing, imports, attachments, or an iOS app. It is the fuller account-based product and is currently free.
Choose Secret Letter if you want to write immediately, avoid registration, and control delivery yourself. The result is a dedicated letter link whose message stays closed until the reveal date. It is text-focused, browser-based, and currently free.
Email delivery or a reveal link
FuturePost schedules correspondence for automated email delivery. That solves the reminder problem: if the address still works and the message clears email filtering, the letter arrives in the inbox on the chosen date. FuturePost's terms also note that successful or perfectly timed delivery cannot be guaranteed.
Secret Letter takes a link-first approach. The URL exists as soon as the letter is created, while the body becomes readable only at the selected date and time. You send the link now, deliver it later, or save it for yourself. Secret Letter does not collect a recipient email address and does not send a future email reminder.
Account and letter management
FuturePost's account model makes room for ongoing management. Its public pages describe a web dashboard, editing and deleting scheduled letters, CSV imports from other services, and a native iOS app. For someone building a long-running future-letter habit, those tools may be worth signing in for.
Secret Letter deliberately removes the dashboard. There is no account setup, inbox workflow, or personal library. Write the letter, choose the reveal date, customize the page, and keep the URL. That is faster for a one-off birthday, anniversary, open-when note, or personal time capsule, but the writer must store the link carefully.
Features and writing experience
FuturePost publicly lists photo attachments, imports, public or private letter settings, and mobile access. Its focus is a managed collection of future correspondence. If media attachments matter, it has the stronger feature list.
Secret Letter keeps the feature set narrow: text, optional sender and recipient names, a reveal date and time, and choices for paper, ink, font size, and handwriting style. The recipient opens a letter-like page in the browser rather than reading an ordinary scheduled email.
Privacy and sensitive information
FuturePost's official terms describe letters as stored in plain text on its servers and allow users to mark letters private or public. Secret Letter stores letter content so it can reveal it later and protects access with an unlisted URL; it is private-by-link, not end-to-end encrypted.
Neither workflow should be confused with a high-security vault. Do not use a future-letter service for passwords, payment details, medical records, legal notices, emergency instructions, or information that could cause harm if an account or link were compromised.
Price: both are free right now
As checked on July 12, 2026, FuturePost's terms say the service is free and that voluntary contributions do not unlock extra features. The same terms reserve the possibility of future paid features or pricing changes while stating that existing core features will remain free for current users.
Secret Letter is also free for its text-based letter flow and has no account tier. Pricing pages change, so it is better to compare the current product experience than build the whole decision around promises about what either service may cost years from now.
Which future-letter tool should you use?
FuturePost is the better fit when automated inbox delivery and a managed library matter most. It also makes more sense if you want attachments, a mobile app, or to import an existing collection of future letters.
Secret Letter is the clearer FuturePost alternative for someone who does not want to register or hand over an email address. It works best when the letter itself should feel like a small event and you are comfortable saving or sharing the link yourself.
